't happen again. fox 5's melanie alnwick is live at the navy yard station in southeast this morning with the latest. >> reporter: metro is apologizing to passengers foren inconvenience after yesterday's mess and it will hold a debriefing with fire department officials this morning to try to figure out what happened and to prevent it from happening again. d.c. fire trucks and ambulances converged on the anacostia and navy yard stations in the middle of the evening rush hour. there was smoke in the tunnel. metro called firefighters to check on what it called an arcing insulator, a part of the third rail that is generating smoke due to wayward electrical current. firefighters cut power to two trains and that left a lot of riders stuck. passengers were sitting on hot, dark trains not getting much direction they say. one says the conductor told them there was a fire on the track and when the lights went out, people panicked. >> we were on there. women started passing out. somebody had an asthma attack. >> i hit the emergency exit button. that is the center door and it opened up. i procee
the pavement. our delia goncalves is live at the navy yard station with the story. kind of a chilly night for a walk home, delia. >> reporter: and folks walked several miles home. they said it was a better way to get home because the shuttle buses, well, there just weren't enough of them. so a lot of them just trekked in the cold several miles to their homes. and it took several hours. the problem started here at navy yard. two metro green line trains did not get to their destination. and it took them two hours to get there. it was a terrible commute for those passengers. and they took pictures and tweeted out those pictures and sent messages of those massive crowds after folks pried open the metro doors to escape through an emergency exit. they took to walking on the tracks after sitting in a hot, dark train stuck in a tunnel between navy yard and anacostia for hours. metro says the problem started with an electrical fire but proper protocol was not followed. >> it was hot and people was passing out. someone opened the emergency exit. we jumped out into the -- through the rails and ran t

the navy yard and anacostia stations during the evening rush. some of them took matters into their own hands and walked out through the tunnel. fox 5's karen gray houston live outside the anacostia station with the latest. >> reporter: some of those passengers just panicked when they were forced to sit in hot dark trains for more than half an hour. they say a conductor went over the pa system and told them there was a fire on the tracks. well, it turns out there was only smoke, but still fire trucks raced to scene at anacostia and at the navy yard stations. metro says the smoke was due to an arcing insulator problem which can be relatively routine, but an emergency responder may have hit controls that accidentally zapped electricity to two green line trains that were stopped in the tunnel. one passenger eventually hit the emergency exit button and discovered it was only a short walk through the tunnel to get out at the anacostia station. so a lot of passengers just followed him out. metro stopped rail service between navy yard and southern avenue and provided shuttle bus service, but
